Use of Artificial Intelligence in the creation of arts

How is it possible to use Artificial Intelligence in the creation of arts? How does this technology work? What can we expect for the future of arts creation?

In this article, you will see the answer to these questions and more! We’ll show you how human beings influenced art and how artificial intelligence will influence art as well.

Ready? So let ‘s do this!

Why do we create art?

Before investigating the uses of AI in creating art, you have to to understand why we create art. Or even, what would be the role of art in human life?

Tens of thousands of years ago, we didn’t have time for that. After all, the life of homo sapiens was to hunt, keep warm, feed and protect each other against intimidating animals.

However, over time, we evolved our capacity for organization and production. We became sedentary, mastered the use of fire, managed to produce our own harvest and formed villages, cities and states.

With that, clearly came the need to explore the interior, explore introspection. In addition, with the skills acquired from our ancestors, such as handling manual utensils, the development of memory and language, we’re able to initiate the first manifestations known as art.

The human being began to highlight daily experiences, existential fears, memories and characteristics of his time in the form of paintings.

Over time, we improve these techniques and the rest is history. But what do we understand from this? That art is the way to express the inexpressive, to communicate an artist’s deepest feelings, as well as the external events around him.

Today, artificial intelligence machines are going through this same learning process in creating art.

  • Memory;
  • Language;
  • Learning;
  • Expression;
  • Pattern Recognition.

These are some key points that define the beginning of AI. And this is the starting point of this article!

Now, we’ll see how the use of Artificial Intelligence can helps us in the creation of arts.

AI as a impersonator

First, Artificial Intelligence should learn and develop itself as an “artist”. For that, it would be necessary to understand and replicate our own art.

Thus, AI was used to replicate and merge already recognized works of art. Obviously, for this to be done, it’s necessary to understand the algorithm, as well as having knowledge of the arts that will be used.

An example of this is Chris Rodley’s Dinosaur X Flower, an AI-powered art that went viral on Reddit. It mixes dinosaurs and flowers (as the name implies) using psychedelic effects, as you can see in the image:

Also, AI as an impersonator can be used to create other types of art, such as videos and music, using the same principle as paintings.

AI as a collaborator

The next step in using Artificial Intelligence to create art is to collaborate itself with the artist.

Soon, AI starts to help the artist in the creation process, going from imitator to collaborator.

An example of this type of category is NSynth, a music program that uses AI to create new music and sound effects together with the musician.

The program uses neural networks and machine learning to understand sound and create and/or blend other sound features that match the music. For example, the system manages to combine a bassoon and electric guitar sound, giving a unique characteristic to the composition.

AI as a creator

Artificial Intelligence as Impersonator and as Collaborator were the initial stages that prepared it for the grand finale: her performance as a creator.

At this stage, we are completely subject to any kind of artistic innovation (or not). Little is known about the use of AI in creating art.

An idea of what we know today (and what we’re exploring) has been tested at New Jersey’s Artificial Intelligence Arts Laboratory. There, the researchers succeeded in creating an Artificial Intelligence program capable of creating art without the interference of the human creative process. However, the system still depends on human interaction for the learning process.

Currently, we are still at the beginning of what will become the use of AI as a creator of art.

Ways to use Artificial Intelligence in the creation of arts

Once you understand how artificial intelligence works and how far we’ve been able to use it for creating art, you’re ready to see some ways to use it in the creation of arts.

In this article, we highlight 3 of them: MidJourning, DALL-E and Stable Diffusion. Check it out!

MidJourney

MidJurning is an art form like Impersonator. That is, the program will work through neural networks trained to transfer and combine different forms of art, according to the creator.

The result? Works breathtaking!

An example is the painting “atomic explosion by Norman Rockwell”, shown below.

DALL-E

DALL-E is OpenIA’s use of AI to create artwork from textual descriptions. It can be used to create both real and imaginary or unrealistic descriptions.

Some examples are:

“A photo of a quaint flower shop storefront with a pastel green and clean white facade and open door and big window”

The Pyramid of Consciousness

Stable Diffusion

Stable Diffusion is another form of Machine Learning created by LMU Munich to develop digital arts through the text-to-image system. In addition, the program is able to develop artwork using the picture-to-picture system – which differentiates it from DALL-E.

Some examples of Stable Diffusion are:

“A digital illustration of a steampunk library with clockwork machines, 4k, detailed, trending in artstation, fantasy vivid colors”

The future of artificial intelligence in the creation of arts

Said all that, what can we expect for the future?

Of course, we can expect changes in the way art is created!

We are not yet at the beginning of the use of Artificial Intelligence in the creation of arts. In this way, what remains for us is to question and wait for the future…

After all, we can ask…

Will this new way of creation help us evolve our capacities of art communication?

Will using AI in creating art change the way we see the world or how the world is seen?

How far will the use of AI be necessary for expression or unknowable?

Only the future of art will reveal these answers. In the meantime, we have to keep evolving, updating ourselves and, of course, creating!
